What Are The Metal Materials of Metal Fences

Aug. 17, 2021

Metal, is a big kind of hard materials, and it has so many classifications. Also, metal fences have different materials, too. The most common ones are iron, stainless steel, aluminum ,bronze and zinc. Here wire mesh fences manufacturer tells you some materials used for metal fences, and their benefits and defects.

Wrought iron

When it comes to metal fences,  iron fence is a classic. It provides a heavy-duty barrier while maintaining an elegant decorative style and an unobstructed view of your property. If you live in a historic area or downtown, a wrought iron fence will be perfect.

Each piece of wrought iron fencing is powder coated to protect it from the elements. Powder coating protects the metal by covering it in a thermal spray topcoat that is more durable than standard paint. But powder-coated materials - especially metal - don't last forever. If the surface of the fence is scratched or damaged, the iron will immediately begin to rust.

To prevent this problem, take the initiative to repaint your fence every year or two and keep a close eye on its condition throughout the year.

Advantages.

Sturdy and durable;

Customizable design;

Classic look, especially suitable for historic areas;

Disadvantages.

Requires ongoing maintenance to prevent rust and corrosion;

Solid wrought iron is heavy and difficult to install;

Fence sections cannot be angled to fit uneven yards;

If you do decide to use wrought iron for decorative fencing, consider using tubular iron for railings and pickets instead of solid iron. Tubular iron retains the strength and mass of old-fashioned solid iron, but is lighter (and therefore easier for installers to use) and less costly.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel wire mesh is most commonly used in industrial settings, but if you are concerned about security, steel is a great choice.

Advantages

Incredibly strong and durable;

Virtually impossible to damage;

Fence sections can be installed to fit hilly or sloped yards with no gaps;

Disadvantages

Like wrought iron, steel requires constant maintenance;

Very heavy;

Does not provide visual privacy;

Most steel fences are available in tubular options that reduce the cost and total weight of the fence without sacrificing strength or quality. If you decide to install a steel fence, make sure the surface is galvanized and powder coated to prevent the metal from rusting.

Chain Link

Although its popularity has waned in recent years, chain link fencing is an inexpensive and durable way to enclose your property. Traditional chain link fencing is made of galvanized steel wire to protect against corrosion and rust.

Advantages

Good value for money;

Easy to install;

Rarely requires maintenance;

Disadvantages

Offers little security - the extensive weaving of the wire makes the chain link fence easy to climb, both for people and animals;

Less attractive appearance than other metal fencing options;

Not allowed by many communities and homeowner associations;

If your main objection to chain link is its somewhat dull, gray appearance, consider vinyl-coated chain link - most manufacturers offer black and green vinyl coatings to help the fence fade into the surrounding landscape.

Copper

If you like the look of wrought iron but are not interested in maintenance or cost, copper fencing is an excellent choice. Since it won't rust or corrode, copper is the ideal choice if you live in a coastal area.

Advantages

Copper does not rust, so this type of fence is virtually maintenance free;

Fence sections can be sloped to fit uneven terrain without leaving gaps at the bottom of the fence;

As strong as iron;

Disadvantages

May be more expensive than iron;

If your fencing needs are primarily decorative, a black copper fence will provide the decorative look you want without breaking the bank or taking up your spare time for maintenance.
